How to spot norway spruce

• Stiff needles attached singly all around the twig
• Long, hanging cones (the longest of our common spruces)
• Drooping 'curtains' of small branches off the main limbs
• Often a large specimen tree or a row of screening evergreens

Norway spruce is a common large evergreen here, often planted as a specimen or a screen. As they age — and especially when stressed by drought or crowding — they thin and brown from the lower branches up, and old ones can become big, heavy removal jobs.

Bagworms and needle issues show up on stressed spruces, but the most common calls are storm breakage and removing declining trees that have gone bare and brown.
