How to spot american beech
- Smooth, silvery-gray bark (the tree people carve initials into)
- Oval, toothed leaves that often hang on, tan and papery, through winter
- Small three-sided beechnuts in spiky husks
- Big, spreading shade tree, common in mature woods and older yards
American beech is one of the most recognizable trees we have — that smooth gray bark is unmistakable. They're slow-growing, long-lived shade trees common in established neighborhoods and the woods behind them.
The reason beech is on everyone's radar now is beech leaf disease, a newer problem spreading fast through our area that's killing both woodland and ornamental beech. If you've got a prized beech, it's worth watching closely.
